Mexico has an amazing variety of livebearing fishes, primarily in the families Goodeidae and Poeciliidae. I’ve been collecting, studying, and keeping wild Mexican livebearers for 40 years, and I will share some of the highlights from my more than 50 trips to Mexico. I’ll focus on an overview of the different species present, their habitats, the threats to their survival, and recent efforts to protect and restore them.
I’ve been fascinated with and passionate about fish for my entire life. I began sport fishing at age 4, keeping fish in aquariums at 10, snorkeling to observe fish at 11, regularly cooking and eating fish I caught at 13, and researching fish academically and professionally at 20, all of which I continue to this day. I received my B.S. in Biology from Union College, Schenectady, NY, and my M.S. and Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, all with a focus on fish. I then worked as a fisheries research scientist and eventually supervisor for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for nearly 33 years dealing with the management and conservation of Wisconsin fishes before retiring in 2017. Concurrent with my WDNR positions, I was Adjunct Curator of Fishes at the University of Wisconsin Zoological Museum, and through that appointment I worked on the study and preservation of Mexican freshwater fishes. Upon retirement from WDNR, I was appointed the permanent Curator of Fishes at the UWZM, a part-time position I continue in today working on both Wisconsin and Mexican fishes and co-teaching a UW-Madison class on the Ecology of Fishes.
The primary way we raise money for our club is through table sales at the GCCA Swap Meet. Please bring your donation fish to our table as early as possible.
This helps us raise money for the club to present programming to you!
Please bring your BAP fish as usual, but make sure you bring a filled out BAP form with you.
